Finally home from Deployment, Michael went with Erika on our now annual March “birthday” vacation – this time to Mexico! After some planning we selected a resort in Akumal in Riviera Maya named Secrets. As you can see from the above picture, it is fantastic.
Flying out of OKC, we’re getting ready for our relatively quick series of flights down to Mexico. It’s only about 2.5 hours from Oklahoma, much better than the 12 hour flight to Japan or an 8 hour flight to Europe.
We were greeted at the airport by our coach – Canada Transports – which included a bucket of champagne for the 1.5 hour trip down the coast to the resort!
Arriving at Secrets, we were blown away by the views. Basically anytime you have palm trees and beaches it’s an instant win, but there were lots of fun decorations and other neat items on display. We were shown to our room…
…which was very beautiful! Our bellhop talked about how most people don’t really enjoy their room and spend a lot of time out and about, but he didn’t see anything wrong with just spending the time in the room, lounging around on the balcony and enjoying the views! …
…which were very beautiful! The balcony faces the water, which you can’t really see from the above but is the Caribbean side of the Yucatán, so it faces east. That means the sun rises in that direction, so in the morning the curtains would be aglow with its light and wake us up. We spent many a morning on the beach doing yoga.
And also swinging in these swings passing the time. It was a very beautiful beach. But more beautiful was the water, which held mysteries we discovered such as schools of fish, coral gardens, manta rays and sea turtles!
We also spent a fair bit of time by the pool, balancing the sun screen reapplication with falling asleep by the water. It was a delicate dance but overall we were successful in avoiding a burn.
The food was also ‘muy delicioso’. There was 4 fancy restaraunts on site with a few other places to find nourishment in a pinch.
All in all very good!! We told them Erika has just celebrated a *cough* birthday in her 20s, so they brought out a nice birthday desert
We also went on a bike tour of the surrounding area.
This was a memorial to the regions founder just in front of the beautiful view of the Caribbean. It looked very similar to Okinawa!
We also hiked through a little nature area which ended in a freshwater spring pool that you could swim in. The water was super clear!
Finally we went to an outdoor restaurant that had lookout tours you could climb up into and then hang out there. Very nice!
Here’s just another few pictures of the trip thus far. It’s certainly been a blast!
