Well, since I am shortly to be off to the land of pain and suffering (Weapons School…), Erika and I decided for some R&R and a little time away together before this next stretch of time away from each other. Okuma is a resort on the northern beaches of Okinawa and is beautiful. A short 90 minute trip and seems like worlds away.
Here you can see our first night here. The sunset was barely visible behind the cloud cover but it was lovely none-the-less. That grill fed us all weekend.
Here we are waiting for the coals to ash so we can get to eating!
Later that night we made a fire and roasted marshmallows. It was a little difficult getting things started with the 20 kt winds but we found a little hill to hide behind and everything worked out. Luckily there was a storm recently and tinder was readily available due to all the downed branches!
Here’s a shot of the water the next morning. Quite beautiful! This is right out front of the little restaraunt they have here that is pretty delicious.
Here’s the awning out front. Usually there are tables here but they haven’t been reconstituted since the storm.
Okuma is on a peninsula, which means there’s a north beach and a south beach. Our cabin was on the south side but we trekked to the north side (“trek”…it’s a 10 minute walk) because that’s where all the water rental equipment was. However, once walking there, we realized it was hot enough to want to be IN the water instead of ON the water.
Here’s us out front of our cabin, again on the south end of the peninsula. It’s looking a bit cloudy but workable!
Here is the beach we ended up going to. It’s kind of secluded as you have to hike through a hilly area before you’re able to reach it. We spent some time in the water and some just relaxing on the beach. There were unfortunately a few visitors that wanted to say hello, but we successfully warded them off.
Erika was even able to find some shells that had washed up during the storm. Some of them are pretty interesting – including one that I’m pretty sure is a fossil of some sort.
Well now we are waiting for the coals to heat again because it’s food time once again. That’s all for now!
After dinner we went back to the beach and found a little hermit crab. He was holed up in quite the mobile home so we got a picture.
The clouds started to give way to the sunset finally, though it still looks quite ominous here…
